It is December 3rd, 2023. I am writing “RPGs Coming This Week, 12/3/23” while sipping hazelnut coffee and listening to the Ys Origin soundtrack on vinyl with my partner. I want to immortalize this moment in time because, well, I’m happy and I want to flex a bit. Anyhoo, let’s get into all the RPGs coming this week!
Born of Bread – December 5th (PS5, XSX, PS4, XB1, Switch, Windows)
I’ve always found the title “Born of Bread” to be weirdly ominous. Bread is such an innocuous thing, but to say you’re born of it gives me minor shivers. That’s because the only thing I know that sprouts from bread is mold, and mold genuinely freaks me out. Something to chew over with my therapist, probably.
Overly personal preface aside, Born of Bread looks excellent. The Paper Mario inspiration is obvious, and I find that the developers manage to pull off a distinct aesthetic that kind of reminds me of cartoons like The Amazing World of Gumball. It’s cute and more than a little goofy. I think our own Neal Chandran’s early build impressions offer plenty of solid details about the gameplay and overall experience. It’s definitely worth a read.

Yukar From the Abyss – December 7th (Switch)
Yukar From the Abyss is an indie otome visual novel delving into Ainu mythology featuring four love interests. The main character Kurumi Oki finds herself wrapped up in paranormal events of mythic proportions, so can she survive the harrowing experiences awaiting her while also forming bonds with those she encounters along the way? Players who have yet to pick up this VN on PC may want to find out the answers to those questions themselves when it also releases on Nintendo Switch this week!

Enclave HD – December 5th (PS5)
Enclave HD is a remaster of a high fantasy-themed hack-and-slash RPG from 2003. It came to PS4, Xbox One and Switch in June, and it’s coming this week to current-gen via the PS5.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis – December 7th (PC)
Free-to-play RPG Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is coming this week to PC via Steam after launching for iOS and Android earlier this year. Data will be cross-savable with the mobile versions, so this should entice those of us who like to play on bigger screens when we can help it.

Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains – December 8th (Switch)
Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains is an epic journey of West meets East in a traditional RPG format. Admittedly, I have mixed feelings about the game’s PC version due to some glitches and a rather poor, unintentionally hilarious English localization, but I’m glad to see that it’s getting a release on the Switch. Here’s to hoping the title gets some much-needed updates so it can really showcase its classic status!
