Atlus and developer Studio Zero have released the second trailer for Metaphor: ReFantazio, titled “The Royal Tournament”. Revealed at the Game Awards 2023, the preview not only doubles down on the game’s high-fantasy premise and confirms an autumn 2024 release window for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. Check it out in its near-overwhelming glory below!

The trailer deepens what we understand of the story that anchors Metaphor: ReFantazio, focusing specifically on the fallout of the assassination of a prominent king and the power vacuum it leaves in its wake. In that vacuum, a Royal Tournament is called for those willing to claim the throne for themselves, including the game’s unnamed blue-haired protagonist.

Beyond that, it looks as if Metaphor: ReFantazio is set on tackling the themes of kinship, reclamation, unity, and corruption within its world alongside a mix of stunning locales, minigames, and turn-based battles.

Initially announced as Project Re: Fantasy in 2016, Metaphor: ReFantazio was revealed in full earlier this year. Its development is led by key, high-profile staff at Atlus, including director Katsura Hashino, character designer Shigenori Soejima, and composer Shoji Meguro, who helped bring players Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5. As seen in the trailer above, they are also joined by concept artist Koda Kazuma (Nier: Automata) and mechanical designer Ikuto Yamashita (Neon Genesis Evangelion) alongside the development staff at Studio Zero.
