Developer and publisher Square Enix has announced via X/Twitter (see below) that their Dragon Quest sandbox spin-off Dragon Quest Builders will at last be ported to PC via Steam on February 13th. Dragon Quest Builders originally released in 2016 for the Sony PlayStation 3, 4, and Vita; 2018 for the Nintendo Switch; and most recently in 2022 for Android and iOS. Given that the sequel Dragon Quest Builders 2 has been available for PC since December 2019, fans may have held fears that the first entry had been skipped over, but this latest announcement will set them at ease.
Builders received strong reviews across its various platform releases. In his review of the original release, RPGFan veteran Rob Steinman praised the game for innovating on the often directionless sandbox style established by Minecraft by offering a charming DQ story with defined quest objectives, but he called out the combat for being messy and repetitive.
RPG or Dragon Quest fans with children might also consider checking out this feature article by Jimmy Turner, where he names Builders as a great option to introduce their kids to the genre’s rich worlds.
Dragon Quest Builders can be pre-ordered individually now via Steam, or as a bundle with Dragon Quest Builders 2. Happy building!
