Square Enix has completed an absorption merger of subsidiary Tokyo RPG Factory. Originally established in 2014, the studio produced just three games in its ten-year history: I am Setsuna in 2016, Lost Sphear in 2017, and Oninaki in 2019. Square Enix gave little reasoning for the closure, simply stating that the company and its IP would be fully transferred to the parent company.
Tokyo RPG Factory and fellow subsidiary Studio Istolia (shuttered in 2019) were singled out by Square Enix as a major source of losses in their 2019 fiscal reporting. The merger also comes less than 12 months after a “reorganization” led to the closure of Luminous Productions, the studio responsible for the divisive titles Final Fantasy XV and Forspoken.
It is unclear at this point what Square Enix will do with the resources and personnel they have integrated, but we at RPGFan can only hope this team will be given opportunities to contribute to great RPGs rather than being left out in the cold.
