Retro Encounter 322 – Skies of Arcadia Part II

Skies of Arcadia Artwork

Skies of Arcadia has big ambitions in the second half of the game, and the Retro crew are finally allowed to sail beyond the sunset! With a new ship, their own secret base, and their very own crew to hand, these four foolhardy sailors discuss their favourite discoveries, crew members, and superbosses, all while mulling on the maturity of the characters, the beauty of exploration, and just how many different ways you can bend both hand-to-hand and ship combat to your will. There’s no Rains of Destruction to fear, here.

Featuring: Alana Hagues, Audra Bowling, Wes Iliff, Zach Wilkerson; Edited by Michael Sollosi

Opening and ending music by Miles Morkri

Alana was with RPGFan for nearly seven years and did a little bit of everything, but writing is her passion. A lover of baking and animals (especially dogs and reptiles), she apparently has a pretty cute accent. If you talk to her about Skies of Arcadia, you've made a friend for life.

I was finally able to listen to the 2nd half of this podcast as I have just beat Skies of Arcadia Legends for the first time. I really enjoyed playing along with you all and hearing your thoughts. Overall I enjoyed this game very much. The story and combat were highlights for me. It's interesting because I was never really able to figure out the ship combat and just kept trying the battles over and over until I got lucky. It sounds like I may have missed something along the way because you all had no trouble at all. My favorite characters include Daigo (should have been a party member), Fina and Brabham (his old man sound effect had me laugh everytime). I also loved the fact that Shrine island was the first dungeon and ended up being connected to the last dungeon, I thought that was so cool. But my favorite dungeon was Pyrann. I loved how this dungeon was set up, and really raised the dungeon expectations for me, and sadly the game never delivered on the rest for me. The music overall was great, altough the song that plays when your party was wounded made me want to cover my ears, but I did appreciate the fact that the music was dynamic based on how the battle was going. I am glad I was finally able to play this game and would love more Skies of Arcadia in the future. Thank you everyone for sharing your own experiences and for finally giving me an excuse to fit this game into my schedule :)

Thank you so much for listening, and I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! It took a few playthroughs for ship combat to really click for me, but paying attention to the colour of the grid, using buffs and debuffs at the appropriate times, and remembering to gear up your ship (it's like a party member), all help. Luckily, trial and error also works :)
